Nalanda University is an Institute of National Importance (INI) to the Government of India. At present Eighteen countries are the signatories to the Nalanda University. The establishment of ancient Nalanda University as a great seat of learning was a natural outcome of the intellectual environment of ancient Magadha. This region was known for its vibrant exchange of ideas, where scholars explored knowledge in its entirety. The ability to bring together diverse fields of learning made Nalanda uniquely attractive to seekers of knowledge from across the world.
Historical sources suggest that Nalanda flourished for nearly 800 years, from the 5th to the 12th century CE. It was a fully residential university believed to have around 2,000 teachers and nearly 10,000 students. The architectural remains of Nalanda reflect a holistic approach to education, where learning, living, and nature coexisted harmoniously.
Nalanda’s reputation for profound scholarship attracted students and scholars from distant regions such as China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. Among the most well-known visitors was the Chinese scholar Xuanzang, who studied at Nalanda and carried hundreds of scriptures back to China, later translating them and sharing this knowledge with the wider world.
Centuries later, the vision of reviving Nalanda was proposed by former President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam during his address to the Bihar State Legislative Assembly in 2006. The proposal received strong international support, including endorsement from leaders of the East Asia Summit.
With the passing of the Nalanda University Act in 2010, the revival of this historic institution became a reality. In September 2014, Nalanda University welcomed its first batch of students after a gap of nearly eight centuries.
Continuing this legacy, Trinity Wisdom Education Welfare and Cultural Society has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with Nalanda University to establish a Nalanda University Centre in Neemrana. The centre, named Tribhuvan College of Environment and Development Sciences, will offer programs in Environmental Studies, Sustainable Development, Data Science, Computer Science, Management, and Humanities - fields that play an important role in achieving global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Through this initiative, Tribhuvan College aims to nurture innovation, encourage interdisciplinary learning, and continue the timeless spirit of knowledge that once defined Nalanda.
