Message from the Director

Ecological and environmental degradation due to various anthropogenic activities, biodiversity loss. and concomitant climate change has made human beings realise the need to restore the degraded ecosystems and halt further deterioration of the planet earth. We are at a point in the history where the actions of human-beings need a fresh outlook in shaping the state of spaceship earth. To save humanity from the perils of ecological degradation and people becoming environmental refugees in their own countries, Rio Earth Summit (1992) proposed seventeen Sustainable Developmental Goals or SDGs as they are popularly called. The SDGs were adopted by UN General Assembly in September 2015.

Quality education is recognized as an integral element of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, and is a considered key enabler for all other SDGs. Quality education in the environment and sustainable development, especially when the UN has declared 2021-2030 as Decade of Ecosystem Restoration, is paramount in achieving SDGs, and also in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). In India, though there is plethora of educational institutions providing sectoral programmes on environment at master’s level, yet at undergraduate level there is a huge paucity of institutions providing quality education in environment and sustainable development. It is in this context that the Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences -Nalanda University Centre has taken a lead to fulfil this void.

New Education Policy (2020) envisages 4-year degree programme with a flair for research. Students after a 4-year degree can directly join PhD in various universities in India and abroad. Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences -Nalanda University Centre aims to provide quality education to the students in the broad area of ecology, environment, and sustainable development. Degree programs in B.Sc. (Hons.) Environmental Science, B.Sc. (Hons.) Sustainable Development Studies, B.A. (Hons.) Economics, B.A. (Hons.) Sustainable Development Studies, BBA (Hons.) with varied specialisations, and B. Com. (Hons.) are being started from the academic year 2023-24. Programme’s structure and syllabi will prepare students in facing and addressing environmental challenges, and finding solutions through innovative data analytics usage. All courses are interwoven and follow tenets of Liberal Arts and Sciences. We have tried to develop state of the art laboratory facilities to study various facets of environment (like air, water, and land), remote sensing and Geographical Information System, and computer labs. Our faculty is initiative-taking, motivated, experienced and research oriented.

I welcome you, my dear students, to join the Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences - Nalanda University Centre and become catalysts for saving our mother earth from further degradation and help objectives of UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration.
