Director's Profile

Prof. J.K. Garg – A pen profile
46+ Years’ Experience

46+ years wide-ranging professional experience in the field of ecosystem analysis and monitoring, wetland conservation and management, natural hazard zonation, disaster resilience and sustainability, Green House Gas emission assessment, ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration, and many other facets of bioresources and environment.

Prof. Garg joined Space Applications Centre, (ISRO), Ahmedabad in 1976 and played a pivotal role in initiating and furthering the use of remote sensing techniques for ecosystem analysis and monitoring, wetland conservation and management, environmental appraisal of developmental activities (mining, thermal power generation, river valley projects), GHG Emissions, natural hazard assessment and zonation (Landslides, forest fires, earthquakes, Rann ingress) besides doing pioneering work for optimal resource use in the Himalayas. A singular contribution of his illustrious scientific career is the initiation of the use of geospatial techniques for wetland research in India for which he has received global recognition. First scientific inventory (1998) and creation of wetland information system are the notable contributions to the science of wetland ecology and to the country. Some of his other major contributions include use of geospatial techniques for EIA, and biomonitoring of river systems.

Prof. Garg joined Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi in February 2008 and has been Dean of the School of Environment Management, and Director, Centre for Disaster Management Studies. After superannuation (January 31, 2019) he was also with TERI School of Advanced Studies as Senior Fellow. At GGSIPU besides teaching guided/guiding students to carry out basic and applied socially relevant research on leveraging geospatial techniques for bio-optical monitoring of aquatic ecosystems, riverine landscape ecology, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Urban Heat Island studies, and forest fragmentation etc. Delineation of boundaries of unauthorized colonies of Delhi using aerial and satellite imagery was also carried out as a consultancy project.

Prof. Garg is currently associated with Wetlands International South Asia as Governing Body Member, and Honorary Treasurer. He is also Scientific and Technical Group (STAG) Member of National Mission on Himalayan Studies of Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. Prof. Garg is also a Member of Technical Committee of Wetlands Authority of Delhi, and Haryana. It is worth mentioning that Prof. Garg is South Asia Lead of GOFC-GOLD (Global Observation of Forest Cover and Land Dynamics) under the aegis of South Asia Research Initiative (SARI) of NASA LULC Program.

Prof. Garg has about 180 Publications including in International/national journals, symposia, and technical reports to his credit.
