Our planet is constantly exposed to a number of human disturbances, which usually appear in the form of air pollution, water pollution, and climate change. The need of the hour is to control and curb such non-nature-friendly activities not just to safeguard the interest of future generations but also to take care of the present-day scenario.
Out of the many alternatives available at our disposal, a go-to measure to keep a check on environmental problems is ecological restoration. We, at the Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences, a renowned environmental science college in Delhi NCR, believe and understand that it is necessary that today’s youth be familiarised with this concept, and this is something that we are trying to deliver to our pupils through our courses.
Today, in this article below, we will shed light on what ecological restoration is and how it forms a significant solution for recovering the ecosystem from the damages made. Read on.
What is Ecological Restoration?
As the name suggests, ecological restoration has a lot to do with restoring the environment from all the damage, degradation, and destruction we humans have done to this planet. Restoration in its complete form is both necessary and indispensable primarily because we have reached the “Now or Never” stage.
The basic goal of ecological restoration is to initiate, accelerate, and recreate an ecosystem that is free from natural calamities and environmental problems such as hurricanes, floods, fires, and waterlogging.
Here’s Why Ecological Restoration is Crucial:
- Quality of air is consistently degrading:
One of the first environmental problems that we need to attend rather immediately is air pollution. Today, we are residing on a planet where breathing green and clean air has become a luxury. If you fail to take action now, the side effects will show up in the form of respiratory diseases leading to permanent damage or even death in some cases.
With ecological restoration, the idea is to keep industrialization under check and also educate people about reducing vehicle usage, cutting down on pollutants, burning waste, and reducing dampness. At the Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences, we encourage our students to make these habits a part of their lifestyle and educate others about the same as well.
- Deforestation is on the rise:
Urbanization is no doubt a great initiative, but not at the cost of the environment. After all, the last thing we would want is to survive in a concrete jungle with zero access to nature and basic amenities. One of the major breakthroughs of ecological restoration is putting up a fight against deforestation and also backing plantations.
The reason being deforestation is one of the causes behind global warming and the emission of greenhouse gases in the environment, which is nothing but a deadly environmental woe.
- Water is both scarce and polluted:
Even though you would like to believe that water is available in plenty on our planet, this is no longer true! Today, if you look around, there are chances of you bumping into multiple households that are not receiving enough water while others are only receiving waste and polluted water. This is the reason why we at Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences encourage our students to remain mindful of their water usage.
Ecological restoration emerges as a key solution to this problem as it focuses on systematic waste disposal, which prevents waste from finding its way to the water bodies and ultimately preventing pollution. Likewise, planting more trees and maintaining balance is another restoration move to attract more rain and prevent water loss.
- Global warming is attacking the planet:
Out of all the environmental problems that our planet is exposed to, one of the most prominent concerns is global warming. The presence of greenhouse gases and carbon footprints in the environment are the leading causes of global warming.
Ecological restoration focuses on ending the vicious cycle of global warming by reducing the use of vehicles, switching from non-renewable to renewable sources of energy, consuming plant-based foods, and stressing the use of appliances and equipment that are energy-efficient.
Final Thoughts:
All this while, if you were not aware of the need to restore the ecosystem, it is high time you realize what a pressing need it is. After all, it is very important to note that every individual, you included, has a role to play in stabilizing the environment. So, though ecological restoration is being done on a larger level by the authorities, you must also bring about basic changes in your lifestyle and day-to-day activities to aid in the restoration measures and help prevent the destruction of the environment. We, at the Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences, one of the renowned environmental science colleges in Delhi NCR, are doing our bit by educating the youth, who are the nation builders of tomorrow, about the various ecological restoration measures they must take to bring back our ecosystem to its previous glory. We would also like to urge and encourage you all to step ahead and pour your efforts in the direction of restoring the environment in whatever capacity possible.
