Can Technology Help Solve Environmental Problems?
Jun 29, 2022 Admin
India has been on the receiving end with respect to its environmental problems. Right from global warming and deforestation to forest fires and wildlife endangerment, we as an economy have multiple challenges to deal with.
Even though we as individuals and collectively in groups are moving towards adopting sustainable and environment-friendly living, we cannot deny the support we are receiving from technology to cope with these environmental woes.
We, at Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences, recognized among the best colleges for environmental science, have consistently been in favor of using technology as a medium to minimize and eliminate environmental hazards. So today, in this article below, let us look into areas where technology has been aiding the environment.
-
Technology to tackle global warming:
Climate change and global warming have now become a global problem. For a long time now, the focus has been on reducing carbon emissions. Even though carpooling and keeping a check on industrialization have been viable solutions, something more concrete is needed.
That brings us to mentioning the technologies that assist with carbon capture, utilization, and storage. These include carbon-based concrete, carbon-eating plants, and trapping carbon in rocks.
We, at Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences, believe that it is technologies like these that will help bring a revolution in the area of environmental hazards.

Technology to protect endangered wildlife:
Even though we may fail to see endangered wildlife as a critical environmental hazard, facts state that this does impact ecological balance in a massive way. Thus, the need of the hour is to protect endangered wildlife, which is where technology comes to the rescue.
One of the technological breakthroughs is the smart collars. These come complete with GPS and sensors, which help in keeping track of animals like rhinos and elephants. Additionally, SIM-based collars have been introduced for animals, which come in contact with humans. Such collars help in reducing animal and human conflicts. The introduction of predictive analytics helps in getting comprehensive information about different animal species, which in turn helps in protecting the endangered ones.

Technology to prevent deforestation:
Deforestation has been on the rise worldwide. To cope with this environmental issue, satellite imagery is one technology that is increasingly being relied upon. It is believed that this tool will help protect the forests and allow trees to stand and thrive.
The role of this tool is to offer real-time information to conservationists. This tool will also help conservationists in monitoring land changes so that they can identify deforestation and stop it right away.
Studies suggest that indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon, who were provided with satellite data and smartphones, were able to reduce tree losses by half in the first year of the project testing itself.
Owing to the same, we, at Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences, constantly remind our students that if used to the fullest, even a smartphone can prove beneficial to saving the environment. We believe early education helps groom students so that they can find their drive to take care of the environment.

Technology to fight pollution:
Another major environmental hassle that we as a country have been dealing with for a while now is pollution – More specifically, air pollution and water pollution. The toxins that are mixed in the air and water have a lasting impact on the environment. Thus, it is crucial that we prevent the spread early on.
In order to cope with pollution, technology has been used extensively. For instance, there are technologies that help control emissions. These include gravity settling chambers, centrifugal separators, and wet particulate scrubbers. Moreover, sensors have been added to industrial machinery to keep pollution under check.
On the other hand, a different set of technologies are used to get rid of toxins from water and wastewater. The focus is on detoxifying water because even though we believe that 70% of the planet is made out of water, today, we are facing extensive water shortages.
Some of the technologies used in this regard include coagulation, dialysis, osmosis, foam flotation, and biological methods. The ultimate goal is to make sure that everyone enjoys access to clean water, come what may. Thus, what is necessary is to embrace technology before it is too late!
Technology is a prerequisite for a healthy environment!
A healthy and thriving environment is indeed one of the core things we all need to survive on this planet. To achieve this goal, we shouldn’t ideally mind putting our best foot forward!
From what we have just discussed, it is clear that technology has a substantial role to play in protecting the environment and keeping environmental issues at bay. However, to ensure that technology keeps aiding the environment in the right way, it is necessary that the youth be educated about these developments.
This is why we, at Tribhuvan College of Environment & Development Sciences, one of the best bsc environmental science colleges in India, make sure that information associated with different technologies that help protect the environment as well as the practical use of the same is well-conveyed to our students. After all, our key aim is to contribute our bit towards environmental management. And technology, if used aptly, can emerge as one of the biggest aids for us, humans, to bring the otherwise worsening things in control.
